Greetings from your Marina Manager
May Barbecue & Chili Cook-Off A Big Hit! Plenty of sunshine; good food; and great conversation made our May Barbecue and Chili Cook-Off a great way to kick off the Summer boating season.

jbfans.jpg
Jesse & Vickie Ruble exemplified the festive spirit with their Jimmy Buffet “Parrot Head” matching outfits. Jesse was seen sampling the chili a couple of times just to make sure he voted for the right one.

seastories.jpg
Speaking of the chili contest, our thanks to our three judges, Chuck Ross (SBF&G) judge; Robin Goodman (SSYS) judge; and Roger Burt (Bay View Nautical) judge.

happy.jpg
Paul Diehl took away first prize for his snappy chili concoction; followed by Rich Bulloch second prize, and Pam Taylor’s third prize entries. Each took the microphone to thank their chili fan clubs for their support. We won’t say who, but one of the chili cook-off winners who was from the U.K. commented on the fact that “a Brit had to show the Yanks how to make chili!”

All in all, a great time was had by everybody. Our next boater BBQ is scheduled for Saturday, August 19th- don’t forget to mark your calendar and plan to be there!

Boat Name of the Month
Every once in a while you see a boat name that just
Goddie2Screws2.jpg
makes you chuckle or admire the creativity. This month’s honorable mention goes to L-Dock’s “Miss Goodie Two Screws”. Makes you wonder what’s behind that name, eh?

Congratulations To All Of You Who Volunteered To Participate In “Operation Clean Sweep”
Good show everybody. The San Diego Port Tenants Association (SDPTA) reports that with your help, over 400 cubic yards of trash were cleaned out of the bay and areas where it might have ended up in the bay. Among the treasures, 3 sunken sailboats in the A-8 anchorage, toilets, tools, engines, tires, mattresses, batteries, and even a lawnmower and a disco ball!

Uncle Sam Needs YOU!
The 4th of July is coming, and that means we could really use your volunteer help to greet and work with the entire City of Chula Vista who will make their annual pilgrimage to the water to see the fireworks which start at 9: 00 p.m.. The crowds have the natural curiosity to want to use rest rooms or  “check out the boats and the docks”, so please everyone don’t let anyone in without a key. Call the marina office at 619-691-1860 today to sign up to be a goodwill ambassador and direct people to the Bayside Park public park areas - you’ll have a good time and you’ll also get a cool marina security t-shirt as a thank you.

Parking on the 4th of July
The best advice is to come early to avoid parking hassles on the 4th of July. The marina lot will be almost full by noon, and the Chula Vista Police Department will close Marina Parkway in the afternoon, and after that, the only way in is if you have your parking permit displayed.

Ramps at Gates 1 & 2 Will To Be Upgraded
We will be replacing the carpet and plywood on the ramps at gates 1 and 2 sometime in the first part of July. There will be temporary ramp closures, so please check with the marina office for closure dates.

“Bon Voyage” to Nancy Hershman!
We will all miss Nancy Hershman who is leaving our marina. Nancy has worked in the Marina Office for two years.  She and her husband Greg moved aboard their boat 8 years ago and are now starting on a new adventure.  They have both retired and with the help of K.C., their 15 year old cat, they are going cruising aboard their boat, Festima Lente.
If all goes as planned the trip will start the middle of July with the first three months in Catalina and the other Channel Islands.  After this three month shake down cruise they plan to head south to Mexico and points south. Bon Voyage, Nancy - Let us hear from you!

Clif’s Chronicles - Did You Know?
On September 28, 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo hung a right turn while coming up the coast from Mexico and "discovered" San Diego Bay. He named it San Miguel after St. Michael the Archangel because it was the day before the feast day of St. Michael. About sixty years later, another Spanish explorer, Sebastián Vizcaíno, came sailing in on November 12, 1602 and re-discovered the bay, which he re-named San Diego after the patron saint of his ship.

The San Dieguito migrated here across the Bering Strait land bridge somewhere around 9000 to 12000 BC and the local Kumeyaay Indians settled on the bay around 1000 BC, but since Juan Cabrillo was the first to record a name, he generally gets the credit for “discovering” the bay.

Hey You! Moron! What did I tell you about making me walk on the docks in the summer noon-day sun! Don’t you realize that the temperature down here can reach 130 degrees! Go get a dock cart and give me a ride! I’d like to see you down here on all fours with sensitive pads on your feet like I have - Don’t make me come over there and bite your ankle!

Editor’s Note: Once again - We apologize for Madeline. We’re trying to get her to be more polished, but we’re not making much progress. If you have a pet question or photo to send to her, please e-mail it to Madeline@BlueSkyNews.com.

Paint Your Bottom

How often should you have your boat bottom painted and which is the best paint to use? The answer is, you should haul and paint your vessel every two to three years. I recommend using a good modified epoxy bottom paint. Obviously when you get the boat out of the water you will want a qualified person to inspect it. I also recommend painting the hull with two coats of paint and a third coat on the waterline and high wear areas. Most boat yards do not offer this and you need to specifically request a three on two paint job. It will last longer and make your diver’s job easier and improve your vessel’s performance.

On a related topic, you should know that copper is the active biocide ingredient in bottom paint which helps to reduce marine growth from attaching to your boat bottom. Well guess what, in Shelter Island for example, the State and Regional Water Quality Control Boards have approved a plan which calls for the reduction of the number of boats with copper based antifouling paint. At the end of the plan about 16 years from now, no boaters will be allowed to have copper based bottom paints on their hulls. So what’s the alternative? Well as of now it looks like more frequent hull cleaning. All of the "Biocide Free" bottom paints tested to date that I know of do not retard marine growth like the current biocide copper. So, stay in touch with your diver and ask him to keep you informed on any improvement to the new "Biocide Free" paints.

Dear Flo-tilla
FloTilla.JPEG

Flo Tillatm
Dear Flo,
I want to know who put women in charge of where things go on our boat? “The knives go in this drawer; the life jackets go in this compartment; that doesn’t go there; ad nausea.” What makes them think they are the grand poobah of stuff?
      Sincerely,
      Feeling Put-Upon

Dear Put-Upon,
Whoever it was probably took one look at the mangled wad you call a dock box and said keep “mayhem man” out of the way while somebody with a brain instills some order on board.
      Regards,
      Flo-Tilla

Dear Flo,
I hear the city of San Diego and the US Navy are planning to put a thirty story office tower and two forty story condo buildings on the bay-front land now occupied by the Broadway Naval Complex. Is that the best use of this fantastic piece of land?
      Yours Truly,
      Disappointed

Dear Truly Disappointed,
Oh Boy! Where is the thinking on the level that the eighth largest city in America deserves? Have these guys ever visited cities like Sydney and seen what they've accomplished at Darling Harbor and their Opera House complex? This is the last opportunity for San Diego to have a downtown gateway icon on a par with the Statue of Liberty, Saint Louis' Arch, or Seattle's Space Needle.
      Regards,
      Flo-Tilla

Letters to the Editor
tn_mailbox-letter.gif
Dear BlueSkyNews.com Editor, Do you know why the public docks at the Ferry Landing in Coronado are closed for repairs, and will they re-open to the public?  According to some of the employees of the restaurants in the area, they have been told it will not re-open to the public. Do you know what the truth is?
     Regards,
     Dave Herring

Dear Dave,
According to a Port District spokesman, they are soliciting bids for reconstruction of the docks located in front of Peohe’s Restaurant. Between the wind, the orientation of the docks, the wave action, and boats bumping into the docks over the years, they sustained a lot of damage.

When they do reconstruct the docks, they will be open to the public. If possible, the Port hopes to achieve a better orientation of the docks. No date for re-opening is available at this time because the Port is debating various options for reconstruction. “We would like to complete the project as soon as possible but another difficulty in getting bids is that most of the contractors are busy with other major dock modernizations", the spokesman said.
     Sincerely,
     BlueSkyNews.com Editor
