H&S/Southwestern Seasoned Sales Veterans Land on Their Feet!
- By Gus Giobbi
On June 23rd, mega dealer Nautical Enterprises Inc. abruptly closed its doors sending shock waves up and down the California coast, but the company's seasoned sales veterans were quick to be picked up and even faster to pick up the pieces!

Nautical Enterprises was the parent company of Southwestern Yachts, H & S Yacht Sails, and H & S Yachts Power.

The company had offices in San Francisco, Ventura, Marina Del Rey, Newport Beach, and San Diego. The company also had a separate sail center and power boat center in San Diego.

At the time of its closing, the company carried Beneteau, Lagoon, Jeanneau, Hunter, Navigator and Silverton yachts.

According to most observers, NEI made an understandable decision in the face of a perfect storm of continued declining boat sales, increasing finance rates, high inventory costs, and high overhead in spite of several attempts to downsize.

According to sales representative Will MacIntyre, "The sales were simply not enough to continue to support the infrastructure. We had the noble goal of being a new boat sales organization with one of everything in stock along with full service, and the depth of the recession was just bigger and deeper than anybody thought."

In San Diego, H&S and Southwestern's sales staff made strategic moves.

Barrett Canfield has opened South Coast Yachts and is San Diego's new Beneteau Dealer.

Mike Dorgan has hung out his own shingle as Dorgan Yachts as the dealer for W.D. Schock boats including the Harbor 20 and the Harbor 25, and soon to be built Harbor 30.

Will MacIntyre joined Emerald Pacific Yachts; Joe Thomas and Jim Chamberlain went to Farallone Yacht Sales; Stephen Rodi signed on at Ballast Point Yachts; Cortland Berlin is now at Marine Max; and Mike Van Tuyl has gone to the service department at California Yacht Sales.

Craig Fecker, owner of San Francisco based Cruising Yachts has stepped up to the plate to start a San Diego division of the company. The new Cruising Yachts San Diego sales team of Paul Briant, Dan Van Zanten, and Ian van Tuyl is headed up by Bo Cunningham. They will carry Jeanneau, Hunter and Caliber sailboats.

As of this writing, all of H&S and Southwestern's lines have been picked up except for Lagoon. The story on who exactly will pick up the service lines is still unfolding at this point.

To NEI's credit, there do not appear to be any hard feelings between the sales staff and the abrupt closing of the company.

Barrett Canfield expressed it this way - "As far as I know, nobody got hurt financially in the closing. The owners paid the vendors what was due, and they even refunded deposits for the upcoming Rendevous. We all harbor no ill feelings and we understand why the decision had to be made".

Sunroad Boat Show Promoters Promise "Unique" Boat Show Features Next January
"A boat show should be more than just a boat show", says Jim Behun, "It for sure should have all sorts of boats and yachts to explore and all kinds of boating services and products, but it should also have an exciting nautical theme".

Behun is the Show Director of the San Diego Sunroad Boat Show at the Sunroad Resort Marina scheduled to be held at Sunroad's Harbor Island facilities on January 28-31, 2010.

"Attendees to the show will not only be treated to a broad array of traditional boat show features, but we will also have some unique attractions such as nautical artists' displays and on-board cooking demonstrations by noted chefs like Island Prime's Debra Scott", Behun said.

Exhibitors in the boating industry have expressed high expectations for the show, which was launched to fill the gap left by NMMA and the San Diego Marriott Marina deciding not to have it's show next January in San Diego.

"The Sunroad show layout has a perfect traffic flow pattern that will guide attendees seamlessly through the adjacent in-water and on-land exhibits", said exhibitor Gil Divine of Emerald Pacific Yachts. "The scenic Sunroad surroundings and ease of access will also add to the attractiveness of the show."

Boat Pet Photo of the Month - Life On a Yacht Is Hard Work for a Dog!
Thanks to Greg and Candy Morris for this picture of Buffett, their Sheltie.

His favorite place to sleep after a "ruff" day of sailing is on top the dock lines under the shade of the boom.

Is Buffett named after Jimmy Buffet maybe? - "Going where the weather suits his clothes!"...

Anglers Queue Up to Compete in San Diego's International Yellowtail Derby
Private boater Robert Pedigo and his team of 4 anglers on Ocean Pearl were the first team to sign up to compete in San Diego's reincarnated International Yellowtail Derby.

The 8-day Derby starts on Saturday, September 26th and runs through Saturday, October 3rd, and is expected to draw 1,500 - 2,000 entrants. Anglers will include individuals on open party sportboats and private boats and teams of 2 to 6 members. IGFA rules will apply for all anglers.

According to Derby coordinator John Campbell, "This is an El Nino year, and the last time we had an El Nino year, over 400,000 yellowtail were caught, so we're very excited about the competition."

For individuals, open party fleet boats will depart from H&M Landing, Point Loma Sportfishing, and Fisherman's Landing.

The Derby is being supported by the Unified Port of San Diego, Fisherman's Landing Tackle, San Diego Port Tenants Assoc., The Maritime Institute, Sea-Tow Services, Arizona Boating & Watersports, the Island Palms Hotel, San Diego Marine Exchange, and the Bay Club Hotel & Marina.

For more information including entry fees or to sign up to enter the Derby, visit the International Yellowtail Derby web-site or call 619-991-5480 or send an e-mail to John Campbell at johncinsd@cox.net.

Who Knows Where You Are???
- By Richard Benscoter
A few weeks ago a close friend of mine sent me an e-mail and excitedly attached the contents of a blog about the latest fishing happenings about 60 miles south of San Diego.

His message in the body of the e-mail was a short and sweet "Bye Bye". Translation - he was going fishing.

I talked to him just before he left, and he told me the general vicinity where he would be fishing but it kind of went in one ear and out the other. This was on Wednesday, and that Friday we found out his wife was admitted to a local hospital. - Nothing life threatening, but she was still in the hospital. She asked me if I could get a message to him and let him know about the situation.

I knew the 25 watt VHF on our boat doesn't have the power or antenna height to reach 60 miles south, so I gave a call to the Coast Guard. "Was it a life or death situation?" It wasn't, so the standard procedure was that they would do their best to hail him on the radio. I provided them with the boat name, make, color, length, and his estimated location.

Well - my friend never got the message. Later I found out that his radio was off; his cell phone was out of range; and he had turned his satellite phone off.

I'm happy to report that he did get home and all is well, but there's a moral to the story that we should all heed.

You never know when somebody might really need to get in touch with you when you're out there on the blue. You probably paid a pretty penny for all of your fancy electronics, so why not leave your VHF radio on. I know channel 16 can be irrigating at times, but when you are being hailed you will not get the message if it's turned off.

If you have a satellite phone on board, make sure people have the number and leave it on. It too is useless if nobody knows the number or it's in the off position.

Most importantly, leave a copy of your intended boating plan with your family, your marina, your yacht club, or a friend; if the need arises they will have a written plan and not have to rely on a past conversation.

Float plan forms can be downloaded from the Coast Guard Auxiliary's web site and many other boating organizations. Also, many vessel towing services offer a float plan watch program where you leave them your plan and if you don't call them to say you arrived on schedule, they start calling you. This is a great safety net. If you have a towing service, ask them if they have a float plan watch.

A good float plan needs to include a description of your boat, who is on board, a description of the safety equipment you are carrying, where you expect to be, and when you expect to be there. Instruct the person holding the float plan to notify the Coast Guard or other appropriate agency if you do not return within a reasonable time after your scheduled arrival (taking into account weather, etc.).

When you arrive at your destination, or if your plans change, notify the person holding your float plan to avoid unnecessary worry and possible waste of search and rescue resources.

One final note - the Coast Guard will not accept float plans, but they will lead the effort to find you if necessary, and if somebody does have your float plan, it will greatly aid them in their search for you!

It's like everything else in life - if you file a float plan, you probably won't need it; if you don't - you might. Why take the chance?

See you on the water!
