Greetings From Your Marina Manager
Welcome to the first edition of Sheraton Harbor Island Marina’s new monthly e-mail newsletter. By using this modern medium, we will be able to keep you posted on marina happenings and important notices you’ll want to have on a timely basis.

While we’re at it, we’ll be including lots of information in each e-mail newsletter that will make your marina experiences more interesting, fun and enjoyable. In this issue, for example, we’ve researched the restaurants on San Diego bay where you can dock and dine, and we’ve got a whole slew of interesting new topics in progress for future editions.

The e-mail newsletter is of course free, but to make sure we know you want to receive it monthly, we need you to visit www.BlueSkynews.com and follow the easy instructions to subscribe. If you would, please take a minute to sign-up now.

There are many other hidden benefits to having an e-mail newsletter that we know you’ll appreciate as time goes by; not the least of which is that it affords you the convenient opportunity to communicate with your marina team. For example, I hope you’ll send me an e-mail and let us know what you’d like to see in future e-mail newsletters.

Thanks – Read on - and we hope to see you at the marina soon.

When is The Sheraton Marina Summer Barbecue?
On the July 8th 2006, Plan to be here for all the fun, great food, and good company. We were going to hire Jimmy Buffet for entertainment and Emeril as the chef, but after looking at the budget, we’re thinking more along the lines of a guy with a kazoo and the cook from one of the yacht clubs. More info to follow.

It’s That Time of Year Again – Two Boat Shows Are ‘A-Comin’!
Yep, That’s right  - we’re hosting Southern California Marina Association’s annual Boat Show on Thursday through Sunday, July 20-23, 2006, and the weekend after that we’re hosting the Brunswick Boat Group Dealer Show. So between the two shows, with setup, move-in and move-out, the docks will be tied up continuously from July 13th through August 3rd.

The SCMA show is open from 12 noon – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; from, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Saturday; and from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The show is open to the public – Adult admission is $10.00; children are admitted free. For complete information about this boat show, please visit www.scma.com.

The Brunswick show the following weekend is not open to the public – it’s for dealers only.

As usual, we’re here to assist you if your boat needs to be moved for the shows, or if you can’t be here during the setup periods, we’ll move you’re boat for you as long as it’s operational. (Remember, non-operational boats will be move at your expense).

Also, please don’t forget to remove barbecues, plants, beached whales, etc. from the fingers not later than July 16th. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Dock Boxes and the Coast Guard – Don’t Get Fined!
The Coast Guard has announced that they will be inspecting all dock boxes in San Diego marinas for hazardous and environmentally unsafe materials. We are trying to obtain some more specifics from the Coast Guard about what qualifies as a hazardous or environmentally unsafe substance, but using common

Rock’ n Roll Marathon Might Rock’ n Roll Your Nerves
The Rock’ n Roll Marathon can be a lot of fun – unless you’re trying to get from A to B in your car. Be aware that the 9th Annual Rock’ n Roll Marathon, a 26.2 mile run, will be held on Sunday, June 4th. This event draws as many as 20,000 participants, with many thousands more fun seekers enjoying 40 live bands along the route. This year, there will also be a “Spirit on the Course” competition, with 40 local high school cheer squads encouraging runners to the finish. For complete information about the marathon, visit www.rnrmarathon.com.

The bottom line for the marina, of course, is that many roads will be closed during the marathon, including some freeway on and off ramps, so there will be many traffic delays and some cases where “you can’t get there from here”.  The majority of the road closures, with the exception of the start and finish areas will be between 5:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. South-bound highway 163 will be closed to traffic from I-805 to downtown from 2:00 a.m. until noon. All other major freeways throughout San Diego will be open on race day, including  I-5, I-8, I-805, and Northbound 163, however, delays can be expected on I-5, I-8, and in the Mission Bay, downtown and Mission Valley areas during peak marathon finishing times, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (South-bound I-5, between Sea World Drive/Tecolote and downtown, and I-8 between Friars Road and I-5 will be congested; avoid these areas if possible).

Hey – I have a brain storm! If you’re coming to the marina that weekend, why not get here on Saturday night!

San Diego Boaters Have Many Dockside Dining Choices
Monica.JPG

   BlueSkyNews.com
There’s no better way to impress your friends than to take them for a cruise that includes a stopover at one of San Diego’s dockside restaurants, and contrary to popular belief, there are a number of great choices. Before you go though, it pays to do a drive-by or shakedown cruise to the restaurant of your choice to make sure you know exactly where the guest slips are. Then you can dazzle your friends with one of your famous “Captain Ron”-style amazing dock jobs. This is important because restaurant dock facilities range from the relative tranquility of Joe’s Crab Shack to the rock-n-roll docks at the Peohe’s in Coronado. Even though many of the docks listed here are first come first serve, it’s a good idea to call ahead for slip space availability. Then, after you’ve selected the right choice for the right guests and checked it out for yourself, set up that memorable cruise experience that your friends will go home and rave about. Click on this link, Dock ‘n Dine to view a list of waterfront choices that BlueSkyNews.com is aware of. Enjoy, and if you find a new restaurant to tie up at, or if you have an experience with one of these restaurants (or restaurant docks) you would like to tell us about, please send me an e-mail -
We’d like to share your experience with our readers on this page as it develops.

Hey! Any of you’se
Harbor Island boaters got a cute pet? Well, cough up a photo and e-mail it to me. If I like it, I might give the furry thing some ink in the next newsletter.

Same goes for boat names. I think there should be a “Minister of Stupid Boat Names” but I really like clever boat names, so fork over a photo of yours and I might give you’se some ink on that too.

Editor’s Note: We try hard to control Madeline, but she’s just a little crusty around the corners. Seriously, please e-mail your pet or boat name photo to madeline@BlueSkynews.com and we’ll make sure she treats you good.

Dear Flo Tilla

Dear Flo
My wife and I have a power boat which we pretty much just use on weekends to relax and unwind on the water. The problem is that all of our sail boat neighbors have all these great stories about "how they almost died going to ......". I wish we power boat people had some great stories to tell too!
      Sincerely,
      Feeling Insignificant

Dear Insignificant
Next time tell your hanky-popper friends this one. "There I was, sitting on the back deck having a Bombay Sapphire Gin & Tonic when from down in the salon, I heard a scream. 'We're out of tonic', my wife shrieked. So I quickly ran to our third refrigerator, and there on the bottom shelf was a six-pack of tonic!" Another disaster averted.
      Regards,
      Flo Tilla

What's That Smell?
A BlueSkyNews.com boat maintenance alert
If your boat has a bit of that rotten-egg aroma, it may or may not be what you think it is. It could be that your battery charger is overcharging your batteries.

Through gradual corrosion, just plain age and even sometimes due to a faulty battery, a battery charger can begin to fail and overcharge some or all of the batteries in your system. This is also a potential fire hazard if let go too long.

Other telltale symptoms besides that sulfuric smell include having to fill battery cells more often than usual or batteries that are too hot to touch.

Did You Know?
The Hotel Del Coronado was the first hotel in the world to boast of completely electric lighting. Thomas Edison himself inspected the steam generator used to power this accomplishment. Architect James Reid, however, was a man to hedge his bets. Gas lines were installed to each room and the electrical wiring was run though them. In this way, should the electrical system fail, they could resort to the known technology of gas lamps. Some of this original wiring was in place as late as 1965.

We can only be grateful that they did not have to resort to the backup plan. Electricity running through wiring that is inside formerly used gas pipes installed in a wooden hotel—frightening thought.
