Greetings From Your Marina Manager
Summer’s now in full swing and we look forward to seeing you all at the marina basking in the great San Diego weather on your boats. July will be action packed as usual, what with the boat shows and the usual increase in tourists visiting the hotel and and escaping the heat at the Harbor Island waterfront.

New features in this month’s e-mail newsletter include a directory of where you can go for fuel and pump-outs and a listing  of events that are happening around town including all of the scheduled fireworks on the bay, and of course, the Sheraton Harbor Island hosted boat shows. We will also be telling you about some new amenities coming your way.

On a personal note, if you haven’t already done so, I would like to encourage you to visit www.BlueSkyNews.com at your earliest convenience to subscribe to receive this monthly newsletter automatically - It’s free, and in addition to it being something we know you’ll enjoy reading, it would be good for us to have your e-mail address on file in case we need to reach you in an emergency.

Thanks again - And I hope to see you all soon at the marina.

Eric Holle - Dockmaster

Be Prepared For The Boat Shows
Just a reminder that we’re hosting Southern California Marina Association’s annual Boat Show on Thursday through Sunday, July 20-23, 2006, and the weekend after that we’re hosting the Brunswick Boat Group Dealer Show. So between the two shows, with setup, move-in and move-out, the docks will be tied up continuously from July 18th through August 1st. The SCMA show is open from 12 noon – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; from, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Saturday; and from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Setting up a boat show tends to be hectic, and the people doing it sometimes take the easiest path to solve their problems. So if you’re not around during setup, avoid being part of their solution by putting your hoses in your dock box, tagging your bumpers with your boat name so we can get them back to you after the show, and locking your dock box. Also, please don’t forget to remove barbecues, plants, beached whales, etc. from the fingers not later than July 16th. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Want Tickets For The SCMA Boat Show?
As a marina tenant, you are entitled to free admission to the SCMA boat show for yourself and your guests. We don’t get the tickets in hand until setup, so give me a call at the marina office at 619-692-2249 or e-mail me at eric.holle@sheraton.com and I’ll arrange for you to pick them up.

Room Service on Your Boat? That’s Roughing It!
We’re happy to let you know that we now have a new Marina Menu just for you! Stop by the front desk or the marina office to get your printed copy of the menu. You can order special appetizers, salads, sandwiches, deli specialties, desserts, and entrees along with spirits beer and wine from the new menu. Party packages are also available for the special occasion where you want to impress your friends. Forget that annoying trip to Vons - The number to call to place your order is 619-291-2900 x43.

More Great Stuff!
There’s lots of other great stuff we want to let you know about. The Waterworks bar has a great new menu, and they’ll also be having some live entertainment for you this summer. We’re also going to have some scuba certification lessons poolside, and lots of other summer fun. Plan to have some great weekends at the marina.

Clif’s Chronicles - Did You Know?
On September 28, 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo hung a right turn while coming up the coast from Mexico and "discovered" San Diego Bay. He named it San Miguel after St. Michael the Archangel because it was the day before the feast day of St. Michael. About sixty years later, another Spanish explorer, Sebastián Vizcaíno, came sailing in on November 12, 1602 and re-discovered the bay, which he re-named San Diego after the patron saint of his ship.

The San Dieguito migrated here across the Bering Strait land bridge somewhere around 9000 to 12000 BC and the local Kumeyaay Indians settled on the bay around 1000 BC, but since Juan Cabrillo was the first to record a name, he generally gets the credit for “discovering” the bay.

Hey You! Moron! What did I tell you about making me walk on the docks in the summer noon-day sun! Don’t you realize that the temperature down here can reach 130 degrees! Go get a dock cart and give me a ride! I’d like to see you down here on all fours with sensitive pads on your feet like I have - Don’t make me come over there and bite your ankle!

Editor’s Note: Once again - We apologize for Madeline. We’re trying to get her to be more polished, but we’re not making much progress. If you have a pet question or photo to send to her, please e-mail it to Madeline@BlueSkyNews.com.

Paint Your Bottom
How often should you have your boat bottom painted and which is the best paint to use? The answer is, you should haul and paint your vessel every two to three years. I recommend using a good modified epoxy bottom paint. Obviously when you get the boat out of the water you will want a qualified person to inspect it. I also recommend painting the hull with two coats of paint and a third coat on the waterline and high wear areas. Most boat yards do not offer this and you need to specifically request a three on two paint job. It will last longer and make your diver’s job easier and improve your vessel’s performance.

On a related topic, you should know that copper is the active biocide ingredient in bottom paint which helps to reduce marine growth from attaching to your boat bottom. Well guess what, in Shelter Island for example, the State and Regional Water Quality Control Boards have approved a plan which calls for the reduction of the number of boats with copper based antifouling paint. At the end of the plan about 16 years from now, no boaters will be allowed to have copper based bottom paints on their hulls. So what’s the alternative? Well as of now it looks like more frequent hull cleaning. All of the "Biocide Free" bottom paints tested to date that I know of do not retard marine growth like the current biocide copper. So, stay in touch with your diver and ask him to keep you informed on any improvement to the new "Biocide Free" paints.

Flo Tillatm
Dear Flo-Tilla
Dear Flo,
I want to know who put women in charge of where things go on our boat? “The knives go in this drawer; the life jackets go in this compartment; that doesn’t go there; ad nausea.” What makes them think they are the grand poobah of stuff?
      Sincerely,
      Feeling Put-Upon

Dear Put-Upon,
Whoever it was probably took one look at the mangled wad you call a dock box and said keep “mayhem man” out of the way while somebody with a brain instills some order on board.
      Regards,
      Flo-Tilla

Dear Flo,
I hear the city of San Diego and the US Navy are planning to put a thirty story office tower and two forty story condo buildings on the bay-front land now occupied by the Broadway Naval Complex. Is that the best use of this fantastic piece of land?
      Yours Truly,
      Disappointed

Dear Truly Disappointed,
Oh Boy! Where is the thinking on the level that the eighth largest city in America deserves? Have these guys ever visited cities like Sydney and seen what they've accomplished at Darling Harbor and their Opera House complex? This is the last opportunity for San Diego to have a downtown gateway icon on a par with the Statue of Liberty, Saint Louis' Arch, or Seattle's Space Needle.
      Regards,
      Flo-Tilla

Letters to the Editor
Dear BlueSkyNews.com Editor,
Do you know why the public docks at the Ferry Landing in Coronado are closed for repairs, and will they re-open to the public?  According to some of the employees of the restaurants in the area, they have been told it will not re-open to the public. Do you know what the truth is?
     Regards,
     Dave Herring

Dear Dave,
According to a Port District spokesman, they are soliciting bids for reconstruction of the docks located in front of Peohe’s Restaurant. Between the wind, the orientation of the docks, the wave action, and boats bumping into the docks over the years, they sustained a lot of damage.

When they do reconstruct the docks, they will be open to the public. If possible, the Port hopes to achieve a better orientation of the docks. No date for re-opening is available at this time because the Port is debating various options for reconstruction. “We would like to complete the project as soon as possible but another difficulty in getting bids is that most of the contractors are busy with other major dock modernizations", the spokesman said.
     Sincerely,
     BlueSkyNews.com Editor
