Farewell to Don and Welcome Aboard to Sarah....
We want to bid a fond farewell to Assistant Marina Manager Don Fannin who has accepted a software sales position in Northern California. We will miss Don's friendly manner and wish him well in his new career. On the other side of the coin, we want to welcome aboard Sarah Smith, our new intern from High Tech High. Sarah will be working in the office Tuesday and Thursday afternoons through January.

Be Cool When It’s Cool!
With the “cooler” weather coming, perhaps a nice Sun Harbor Marina sweatshirt is just what you need to ward off the chill. They are available for sale in the marina office!

Brownie Points and Kudos To Good Deeds
I want to thank those of you who are making a special effort to return dock carts to the head of the docks when you’re done with them. We all know what a pain it is to go “cart hunting”, so we hope you’ll all continue to be kind to your neighbors by grabbing unused carts on your way to the bottom of the main dock ramp.

Dinghy Go Bye-Bye
Please make sure your dinghies are properly secured to the dock or your boat. We have had a few incidences recently where dinghies have gotten loose and decided to explore the world on their own. Also, not only for this reason, it's important that we have who the dinghy belongs to as well as your dinghy's California CF registration number on file in the office. If you haven't already done that, please take a moment now to contact the marina office and give us that information.

Anchor-Clanking Isn’t Fun
Need some help from those of you who are puling your boats too far forward in your slip and sticking your bow sprit out onto the walkway. If somebody smashes their head into your anchor, you probably can’t get away with your Rodney Dangerfield act and threaten to sue them for scratching your anchor. More likely, it will be the other way around. If you’re one of the offenders, please correct this hazardous situation right away.

LEED Certification: Part VII
 - Innovation & Design Process...
New technologies are continually introduced to the marketplace and up-to-date scientific research influences building design strategies.  The purpose of this LEED category is to recognize projects for innovative building features and exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED Green Building Rating System.  Sun Harbor Marina is recognized for the following innovative and exceptional performance green building strategies:

 - Clean Marinas California Program:
Last December Sun Harbor Marina was designated as a “Clean Marina” for the successful implementation of the Best Management Practices.  This program and its outcome help sustain aquatic life, water quality and the environment.

 - Double Green Power:
To meet the Green Power credit requirement, supplied renewable power must equal 50% of the project’s energy consumption for a minimum of two years.  Sun Harbor Marina doubled this requirement and purchased 100% of the project’s energy consumption for two years.  This strategy greatly exceeded the requirements of the existing LEED credit and was therefore awarded this accomplishment.

 - Educational Signs and LEED Information
  Center:
Substantial efforts were applied to maximize LEED education and sustainable living.  The educational signs, product displays and resources located in the LEED Information Center were designed to promote green building practices and provide the knowledge to understand the benefits of living responsibly.

Other Stuff From Your Marina Manager
Here’s a few other reminders we would like you to review.
 - Check the way you boat is tied down - it may be sunny and calm today, but you should always tie it down as if heavy weather is coming tomorrow.

 - When you leave the marina, please turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment.

 - Please use a dumpster for disposing of crankshafts, and other large items resulting from boat repairs.

 - Make sure to close any doors and gates around the marina. This is for your own safety and the safety of marina property.

 - Coil up water hoses and make sure they’re shut off.

Improvements to America’s Cup Harbor Move Forward
Another Shelter Island project received the go-ahead from the Port District Board at the August 8 meeting. A new Option Agreement was granted to Driscoll, Inc. for a 30-year lease of the Kettenburg Marine facility located at America’s Cup Harbor. This proposed development would improve public access by constructing a 680-lineal foot pedestrian walkway, a public plaza, new dinghy docks, water taxi landings and additional parking spaces. New boatyard buildings and marine sales and service buildings would also be constructed. If all conditions of the Option Agreement are met, construction will start next May.

San Diego Boaters Have Many Dockside Dining Choices

There’s no better way to impress your friends than to take them for a cruise that includes a stopover at one of San Diego’s dockside restaurants, and contrary to popular belief, there are a number of great choices. Before you go though, it pays to do a drive-by or shakedown cruise to the restaurant of your choice to make sure you know exactly where the guest slips are. Then you can dazzle your friends with one of your famous “Captain Ron”-style amazing dock jobs. This is important because restaurant dock facilities range from the relative tranquility of Joe’s Crab Shack to the rock-n-roll docks at the Peohe’s in Coronado. Even though many of the docks listed here are first come first serve, it’s a good idea to call ahead for slip space availability. Then, after you’ve selected the right choice for the right guests and checked it out for yourself, set up that memorable cruise experience that your friends will go home and rave about. Click on this link, Dock ‘n Dine to view a list of waterfront choices that BigBayNews.com is aware of. Enjoy, and if you find a new restaurant to tie up at, or if you have an experience with one of these restaurants (or restaurant docks) you would like to tell us about, please send me an e-mail -
We’d like to share your experience with our readers on this page as it develops.

Dear Flo-tilla

Flo Tillatm
Dear Flo,
I want to know why women feel like it’s their duty to keep us men busy when they’re not around to supervise. Yesterday, my wife said “Honey, I’m going to run to the grocery store; this would be an excellent time for you to replace that bilge pump and scrape down the bottom of the dinghy!”. Who asked her? I was going to take a nap!
      Sincerely,
      Bummed Out

Dear Bummed,
I agree with her - There’s nothing more disturbing for a woman than seeing a man free to get into trouble or peacefully lying at rest. It’s our job to make sure that doesn’t happen. So get off your lazy bum and do something useful.
     Yours Truly,
      Flo-Tilla

Clif’s Chronicles - Did You Know?

We think The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge is pretty..., well, pretty! The American Institute of Steel Construction apparently agrees. In 1970 the Institute bestowed the bridge its Most Beautiful Bridge Award of Merit.

But the Bay Bridge’s sleek lines and sweeping design with that 90 degree turn in it are not for aesthetics alone. You might have noticed San Diego has a few Navy ships around, including aircraft carriers. The bridge rises to a height of 200 feet, high enough to allow a carrier to pass beneath it. The curve and the bridge’s length of 2.12 miles allows this to be done while keeping the grade at 4.67 percent. If it weren’t for the curve, it would be so steep you’d need a dune buggy to  get up and over the thing.

Clif Oliver, a San Diego Native, enjoys learning more about the town in which he was raised. If you have an interesting bit of trivia about San Diego's bay areas you would like to share, please e-mail him at clif@BlueSkyNews.com.

Between the Sheets

Whistle in the Rigging - Ever been sitting on your boat enjoying a nice cool beverage when all of a sudden you hear a howling whistle that brings back the goose bumps of winters spent on the eastern seaboard?

The cause is the wind blowing through the standing rigging which causes the smooth flow of air to be split, creating a turbulent vortex which causes the air to vibrate. Making it worse, the boat itself sometimes acts as a resonant chamber to the basic whistle, thus making it louder and more disturbing to your neighbors.

Enough of why it happens, what do we do as sail boaters to keep peace in the neighborhood? The answer is to spiral a line around the offending rigging. This will disrupt the air flow and the chilling whistle will be gone and your sailing neighbors (and even some of your power boat friends) will most likely chill your glass!!!

Editor’s Note: Richard Benscoter is a long time avid sailor and can be seen frequently on the bay sailing a 36 foot Catalina, El Marinero. If you have a sailing question for Richard, send your e-mail to richard@BlueSkyNews.com.
