It promises to be an exciting event, but you need to be aware of the planned impact to all boating in the area of the event. There will be periodic bay closures for periods of setup through the actual races. This extends from Wednesday, September 19th through possibly Sunday, September 23rd. Hiking Soon To Return to Santa Cruz Island
After a two year suspension, hiking is set to soon return to Santa Cruz Island.

The largest of the eight Channel Islands, this 96 square-mile island has a spectacular 77-mile stretch of coastline and includes two mountain ranges flanking a central valley. Often referred to as "the Galapagos of North America," the Channel Islands are virtually untouched, offering an unparalleled opportunity for scientists and other visitors to understand how nature works.

A paradise for boaters, anchorages on the National Park side (the east end of Santa Cruz) are open to the public year-round for anchoring, kayaking, snorkeling, diving and exploring ashore.

The island is co-owned by the Nature Conservancy and Channel Islands National Park. Visit these two web sites for complete boating and activity details.

Your Impact on the San Diego Bay - Part 3
The Clean Water Act
What is the Clean Water Act? Initially, growing concern and awareness in regards to the need for controlling water pollution, led to the establishment of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972. Its amendment in 1977 lead it to become commonly known as the Clean Water Act.

Basically, it enacts a basic structure for regulations on pollutants being discharged into the water of this country. Under the Clean Water Act's Jurisdiction, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was given the authority to create pollution control programs which would set standards for industry. Examples of these standards are wastewater standards, requirements to set water quality, and standards for all contaminants in surface waters.

The act makes discharging of any pollutant into water illegal without the proper permit. It was also the source of funding for the construction of sewage treatment plants.

Effects of the Clean Water Act have benefited our environment tremendously, and those who follow and support it should be commended. However we should still work hard to maintain a clean and healthy bay. According to the Pollution Scorecard, San Diego's Watershed ranks 70 (0 being cleanest and healthiest, and 100 being dirtiest and most polluted) when compared to other watersheds in the country. Especially with San Diego's enormous growth rate, we should be cautious of keeping our pollution discharge under control. Years ago, during the initial phases of the Clean Water Act, many places in and around the San Diego Bay requested exemption form the act. Due to their mandatory obedience to the Act, San Diego's waters have become cleaner and healthier. We should all keep up the good work, and work towards a better future!

Between the Sheets - About Sail Trim
Everyone talks about it; everyone wants it; so how do you get it and make it work for you?

A sail is kind of like an aircraft wing placed vertically on a boat, with the distinction that we sailors can change the shape of that wing on the fly to achieve better (or worse) performance. Aircraft wings are studied in many science classes, but unfortunately sails are not, so we have to search a little harder for easy to understand useful tips on how to properly trim a sail.

The shape of a sail is changed with adjustments of the downhaul, outhaul, boom vang, and traveller. The difficult part of sail trim is that all these things must be adjusted in harmony, or the desired boat acceleration and speed will just not be there.

I'm sure like many of you, when I first started to sail long ago I used the trial and error method on the water. This method works up to a point, but I found myself frustrated that I had difficulty verbalizing to my crew the exact shape I desired in the sail, and more importantly how to tell them what to do (and why) to achieve that shape. With a lot of practice, my crew all eventually got pretty much on the same page, but we were still not going to be leading the summer race series.

It was evident I needed a solution to teach some of my crew more about sail trim if we were going to become competitive. There had to be a simple way to impart the volumes of sail trim knowledge in a very condensed and easy to understand format.

I found there is a lot of material out there even in the "Dummies" series of books, but what finally worked for us were sail trim charts by Don Juliette. These are available in numerous places - I got mine on the internet at sailboatowners.com.

Now my whole crew is on the same page, and occasionally even in the lead in a race. See you on the water or in Catalina next month!
